WEEK 2 REVIEW-WEEK 3 PREVIEW

Five match days into Abuja’s Capital League and the league table has started taking shape. Budget Warriors are the current league leaders with 3 wins from 3 games, followed by The FA FC and Maracana with 7 points each. At the bottom of the table are Super FC, Bucklers FC and Panama FC. These three teams are all debutantes in the Capital League, and have yet to register a win in the competition thus far. The quality of teams playing in the league is not to be underestimated, and these teams have found this out the hard way: 3 Ls in a row.
The impressive Maracana FC, who came from 2 goals down in their last match to win the game 4 – 3, are a team that has majority of their players based in Kaduna. So far these players have driven to Abuja in the past two weekends for their fixtures despite the recent insecurity along the Abuja – Kaduna route. Their captain stated that the same bravery these players employ in plying the route down to Abuja is the same one they take onto the pitch. This bravery is yet to fail them as they remain unbeaten in the league.
The FA FC have also had a strong start to the season. It seems the experience they gained from last year’s competition is playing a significant part in their successes. They are a more organised outfit with a new and ambitious manager, who confidently stated they will be fighting for the league title this season. It looks like we will be having an intense and exciting battle at the top this year.
We head into this weekend starting with match day 6, with one of the biggest games of the season in the day’s lineup: Budget Warriors V Budget FC! Current league leaders going against current league champions, a brotherly affair that will no less be a thriller!
A game to watch on matchday 7 is Hushpuppi FC V TNT FC. Both veterans of the league have had a mixed start to the season as they languish in mid-table. The teams have a similar playing style, and will both feel confident they can take the three points.
Matchday 8’s standout game of the day has to be the Ibusa V Maracana game. Ibusa had an impressive first game where they announced their arrival to the Capital League, causing other teams to take notice. In their second game, it was a different story as they were taken apart in the first half by a ruthless Budget Warriors. They will be looking to put that game behind them and show their first game was no fluke.
This weekend some teams will be aiming to get their first points of the season, while others will be looking to extend their unbeaten runs. It’s still too early to predict how the table will look come the end of the season. But as the league progresses, players match fitness levels will pick up, and managers will become more tactically adept, guaranteeing more exciting games to come for the fans.
